Medical Emergency Forces Icon of the Seas to Turn Back Shortly After Departure

Just three hours after departing from Miami on Saturday, Royal Caribbean’s Icon of the Seas was forced to make a 180-degree turn and head back toward the U.S. coastline due to a medical emergency onboard.

According to real-time data from Everything Icon’s ship tracking system, the vessel began to deviate from its original course at approximately 20:00 ship time. At that point, Icon of the Seas reduced her speed from 18 knots to 8 knots and turned back toward the Florida coastline. Around two hours later, the ship arrived off the coast of Port Everglades, where she paused for approximately 45 minutes to safely transfer the passenger via pilot boat.

Using a pilot boat is generally the preferred method for evacuations of this nature, as it allows the cruise ship to remain offshore, avoiding the longer and more complex process of entering port. This is especially critical during time-sensitive medical situations. However, in some cases - depending on sea conditions and the condition of the patient—a transfer by boat may not be possible, and the vessel may be required to dock or request a medical evacuation by helicopter. Each scenario is assessed individually to determine the fastest and safest course of action.

In this instance, Icon of the Seas was still close enough to shore to enable a swift and effective response. Once the transfer was complete, the ship promptly resumed her course toward the Eastern Caribbean.

A passenger onboard, Ramil Peredes, shared an update on social media:

"Royal Caribbean International Icon of The Seas had a medical emergency 4 hours into the cruise to Sint Maarten and had to turn back. We departed Port of Miami and returned back to Port of Fort Lauderdale. The U.S. Coast Guard picked up the person 2252 EST and we are resuming our trip. Pray for the person that they are okay, last we heard the person was in critical condition."

Despite the unexpected detour, Icon of the Seas is still scheduled to arrive in Saint Kitts on time, with her call into port expected at 8:00 AM Tuesday morning.

We join Ramil and the rest of the passengers in sending our thoughts and well wishes to the individual affected and hope for a full recovery.
